Clay1A, A Clay Museum

Ipswich, UK

Thing Studio

Clay1A is a new museum in Ipswich dedicated to clay, transforming a 19th-century grain warehouse on the River Orwell into a contemporary public cultural institution. The museum is due to open in spring 2028.

Designed by Thing Studio, Clay1A will explore the role of clay in everyday life through objects, artworks and interactive displays. Its visitor experience is intended to be tactile and highly accessible, with technology integrated throughout the museum and a dedicated area for an immersive show.

Studio Jouan is providing acoustic design for the project, helping the new museum balance the acoustic requirements of exhibition, public and immersive spaces within the constraints and character of the existing historic building.
