Grand Egyptian Museum
Gizah, Egypt
Saturday, 1 November 2025 marked the long-awaited full opening of the Grand Egyptian Museum (GEM), celebrated with a ceremony linking Washington, D.C. and the museum’s monumental obelisks.
Designed by the Sino-Irish practice Heneghan Peng Architects and located beside the Pyramids of Giza, the GEM is arguably the largest museum in the world. Conceived as both a cultural and research centre, it aims to present the legacy of ancient Egyptian civilisation within a striking contemporary architectural setting.
The museum complex spans 50 hectares and includes 81,000 m² of exhibition space, a children’s museum, conference and education facilities, an extensive conservation centre, and landscaped gardens. Its vast collections include the treasures of Tutankhamun and the Solar Boat, now displayed near the pyramids.
Working with Legacy, the building’s operator, and S/L Architects, Studio Jouan is proud to have contributed to the project’s completion by providing the acoustic design for the 600-seat auditorium, intended for conferences and concerts, as well as the 6,000 m² administrative wing.
